Nov. 20, 2008, 1 a.m. - The D.C. Republican Committee yesterday filed a challenge to the certification of Michael Brown to City Council (At-Large) with the Board of Elections and Ethics.

“Michael Brown’s election to the D.C. Council makes a mockery of the D.C. law," D.C. Republican Committee Chairman Robert J. Kabel. "Michael Brown is no more an Independent that I am, and I am chairman of the D.C. Republican Party. Everyone knows Michael Brown is a Democrat and not an Independent, he said so himself."

Brown, who has been represented by RCI in the past, has said he is a registered independent.

The Republicans have hired Charlie Spies from McKenna Long & Aldridge, LLP to represent them.

"We are challenging his certification to the D.C. Council on the grounds that certifying him as an At-Large member of the council would be a violation of the letter and spirit of the law," Kable said. "As chairman of the D.C. Republican Party, we are taken legal steps in blocking Michael Brown’s attempts to circumvent the law that protects minority parties in the District.”
