Prince George
's County Executive Jack Johnson announced that $500,000 in grant
money has been approved to help restore 16 of the county's important
historic buildings.
"These
buildings are precious to our heritage," Johnson said.
"And they include a tiny, African American schoolhouse
forgotten for generations, three churches badly in need of window
replacements, and a number of homes and barns that are important to
their neighborhoods. I am proud of the winners for preserving
these building for future Prince Georgians."
The
program was conceived by county residents four years ago and final
approval of the 16 grantees and 2 alternate selections came last
Thursday with an okay from the
Maryland
National
Capital
Parks
and Planning Commission.
The
innovative program helps owners make historically accurate repairs
to restore these homes and buildings to their original importance,
officials said.
