Prince George's wins award

 By Staff

Feb. 2, 2009, 2 a.m. - Keep Prince George's County Beautiful received the Keep America Beautiful President's Circle Award for their exemplary performance in reducing litter, minimizing waste and beautifying/improving local communities, county officials said.

The award was presented at the President's Circle Award luncheon during Keep America Beautiful's 55th annual National Conference in Washington, D.C.

In qualifying for a President's Circle Award, KPGCB met KAB's standards of excellence by conducting an annual Litter Index, calculating the affiliate's cost/benefit ratio and engaging volunteers to take greater responsibility for their community environment.  In addition, KPGCB was required to conduct activities in litter prevention, waste reduction, and beautification/community improvement.

"KPGCB is proud to receive the President's Circle Award," said KPGCB Chairman John Neville.  "We will continue our educational outreach efforts to empower County citizens and residents to respect and care for their environment by promoting recycling, litter prevention and cleanup programs."

KPGCB is a non-profit corporation that partners with the Department of Environmental Resources' Waste Management Group to create cleaner, more livable communities.  Benefiting from its association with the KAB network of nearly 1,000 affiliates and participating organizations, KPGCB supports the County through the development and implementation of waste management programs that include the Litter Free School Program (in partnership with Prince George's County Public Schools), Great American Clean-Up, Cigarette Litter Prevention Program and Wipe Out Wireless Waste.  KPGCB is currently the only KAB affiliate in Maryland.

"DER is proud to partner with KPGCB and will continue to support them in their efforts to enhance the quality of life for the citizens and residents of Prince George's County," said Charles Wilson, Director of DER.
