March 1, 2010,
8 a.m. - D.C. Mayor
Adrian Fenty joined Ward 4 Councilmember Muriel Bowser and DC
Chief Librarian Ginnie Cooper to celebrate the end of demolition
at the Petworth Neighborhood Library with a wall-breaking
ceremony.
“Today, we break the interior wall
through 70 years of history to revive this library to meet the
needs of this community while maximizing this historic
landmark’s use,” said Fenty. “This new facility will function as a
major focal point for community meetings, reading and recreation
for years to come. “
$12 million renovations for the Petworth Neighborhood
Library, located at 4200 Kansas Avenue, NW began in June 2009
and includes a revamped floor plan, window and door restoration,
roof repairs, improved ADA access, a new cupola and balustrade,
new mechanical and HVAC systems, full restoration of original
interior finishes and furniture, new elevator, electrical and
fire alarm upgrades, a new outdoor activity area and a
100-person meeting room.
“The Petworth Library has served the
district well for 71 years” said Ginnie Cooper. “With these
improvements, users will have state-of-the-art library services
in space that showcases the building’s classic architecture.”
The renovation was designed by Franck & Lohsen and is being
completed by the Bennett Group and GCS/Sigal, LLC.
Originally designed by Nathan C. Wyeth, the
Georgian revival-style library building first opened on Jan.
27, 1939.
The renovated Petworth Library will re-open its doors in
Spring 2011.
During the library’s renovation, Library services are being
provided at an interim library located directly next to the old
facility. The Interim library features 20 computers, free WiFi
Internet and a wide range of books CD’s and DVD’s.
